Assignment 1 PART 2

1.  The main differences and similarities between art and press photography?

Press Photography is supposed to present the photographs as is. They are not allowed to alter the images or add objects to enhance the image. The main motto is to show, publish or document an event, incident or convey a message. They are published in newspapers, specific magazines more over on web sites.
On the other hand, Art Photography allows the photographer to come out with his /her creativity. The photographer is allowed to explore beyond his boundaries to edit the pics as per his imaginations. They may use software or tools like photoshop, picasa, corel craw, CS3 etc. Art photography is a medium of expressing photographer’s vision of looking at things.

Main prize in Swiss Pres Photo 07: Installation on the Aletsch Glacier to highlight the vulnerability of the melting glaciers. Organized by Greenpeace in collaboration with the US artist Spencer Tunick, 18 August 2007.

2.    Is it ethical and acceptable to alter art photographs? Why? Why not?
Yes! It is very much, as it is the way by which photographer can express his feelings and creativity. However, I would say it is unethical to mislead or harm anyone’s feelings by altering pics. It is important that the public knows that their pictures have been modified, and they do not intend to play with serious matters. Art photographers can modify their photographs until they feel that they have achieved what they want to communicate with them.

3.    Is it ethical and acceptable to alter press photographs? Why? Why not?
No, it is Not ethical to alter press photographs. It is in the guide lines that press photos are not to be altered in any way. Press photos represent the truth by showing the incident/event etc by the medium of photographs. Press photographs are taken to show people the reality. It may make tragic events more sad, however people still need to see the reality rather than a touch up.
